    What is Prime Agricultural Area?

A Prime Agricultural Area is defined by the Province and relies in part on the Canada Land Inventory. The Canada Land Inventory created a system for mapping soil capability for agriculture into classes. The classes are on a scale from 1 to 7 with 1 being the best soil for farming.

Under provincial policy, Prime Agricultural Areas means “areas where prime agricultural lands predominate” and includes:

    • Areas where the Canada Land Inventory identified soils with agricultural capability of class 1-3 and associated lands where the Canada Land Inventory identified soils of class 4 – 7 lands, and
    • Additional areas where there is a local concentration of farms that exhibit characteristics of ongoing agriculture.
